What is the essence of photography? When did it become an art? How is evolving this practice?

In his Camera Lucida, Roland Barthes defined the EIDOS of photography as the essence of photography that separates it from all artifices, methods and categories.


In Lewis Payne's portrait, the essence is a man who knows that he is going to die. The pose shows not only the certainty of death, but also the acceptance of faith.
